Lying Questions

Why do pooka lie?

Pooka lie to break down the barriers of communication and make people re-examine that which they take for granted. What is truer, the words, or the meaning behind the words? In a sense, this is a way pooka help to stave off Banality, albeit unintentionally. For a full discussion on pooka lies, see the Pooka Guide to Lying here on this website.

Is everything a pooka says untrue?

No. Pooka must only make part of what they say untrue. Just what part is the lie and what is the truth is up to listener to decide.

Does just saying the opposite of what you mean count as lying?

No, most definitely not. The point of lying is to confuse the truth and force the listener to seek it out. Simply saying the exact opposite of what you mean is far too easy to understand and does not cloud the truth at all.

Can pooka ever tell just the truth?

Yes, if they succeed in a Willpower roll with a difficulty of 8. The pooka can then tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth for five minutes per success on the roll!
Of course, this in no way means anyone will believe the pooka is telling the truth, even if he is. It's all part of the burden of being a pooka. Your credibility is shot right from the get-go.

Shapeshifting Questions

Why canít pooka shapechange in front of others? Why must they only do it in secret?

No one is absolutely certain why. Itís one of those mysteries of the Dreaming. The most likely story, though, goes as follows...

At one time, pooka could change into their animal miens and back while other people could watch. However, the pooka chose not to do so. When a pooka shapechanges, he is vulnerable during the momentary transition. Caught between forms, the pooka could to nothing to defend themselves. They were also disoriented for a few seconds after the change as they adjusted to their altered bodies and perceptions.

This vulnerability made them nervous. Their animal selves instinctively wanted protection during that weak moment. Thus, the pooka agreed to only change in private, except during emergencies. That way, they could be relatively safe as they changed forms. A moment was all they needed.

Now, as the centuries went by, something happened. The Dreaming took notice that the pooka were no longer shifting before the eyes of others. Itís reasons being unfantomable, the Dreaming made it so that the pooka could only shapechange in private. They no longer had the choice. Perhaps it was punishment for not taking full advantage of the gifts the Dreaming had bestowed upon them, perhaps it was a reward for their careful attempts uphold the Escheat. Whatever the case, at some point the pooka, perhaps during an emergency when one had to change in front of others, and found out he couldnít, that they realized their powers had been altered.

Perhaps wisely, the pooka kept this quiet, not telling the other kiths. As the pooka almost never shapechanged in front of them anyway, it wasnít a change the other kiths would notice. And so it remains to this day.

What happens to a pookaís belongings when she shapeshifts?

Normally, a pookaís voile and chimerical items are subsumed into her animal mien, while any and all non-chimerical items (including Treasures not made to do so) are left behind, simply falling to the ground around her. The only way around this is if the pooka character has the Merit: Wholecloth, which allows her to take non-chimerical items into her animal mien.

Note that all items, both chimerical and mundane (if they can subsume mundane items), are not present or usable on the animal mienís body. So your animal mien will not be wearing a little chimerical outfit and swinging a little sword. All subsumed items vanish and will not appear again until the pooka returns to his fae or mortal mien.

What happens if a Pooka experiences chimerical death while in his Animal Mien?

Such a situation present an odd problem that only a Pooka can have. Chimerical death for any fae results in a temporary coma, after which the fae wakes up in his Mortal Seeming, his Fae self submerged, and with but a few fuzzy memories of his time as a Changeling. The fae remains so until he is infused with Glamour, whereupon his fae soul reawakens.

For a Pooka who chimerically dies in his Animal Mien, things are different. His Anima Mien is a real, mundane body, and the transformation to and from it are a conscious decision that cannot be made in front of witnesses. A Pooka in this situation remains in a coma in his Animal Mien. When his coma has ended (determined by his Banality score), he will revert to his Mortal Seeming and wake up as any other Fae. If there are witnesses about, however, the Pooka remains unconscious and in his Animal Mien until he is alone (which might take a while).

Can pooka cast cantrips while in their animal miens?

Yes, they can. They simply perform Bunks that take advantage of the animal form. Cat pooka might play with a ball of string, dog pooka might chase their tails, bird pooka might tweet a little tune, and so forth.

Can a Pooka have chimerical features in his Animal Mien?

No. The Animal Mien of a Pooka is completely mundane looking. Nothing of her Fae Mien shows. If, say, a Dog Pooka had the Winged Merit, then the wings would only appear in her Fae Mien. Her Animal Mien would remain wingless.

Confidant Questions

What's with the Confidant Birthright? Why would anyone tell pooka their deepest secrets? Why would anyone trust them?

Like everything about the Pooka, this tends to be a bit confusing (as well it should be). Why would you profess your inner feelings to someone who obviously can't deal with the truth? And who is a notorious prankster to boot? Well, there are several things at work behind this unique power.

First is that pooka can be trusted to keep secrets. Pooka are the best secret-keepers in the world. After all, if the pooka did reveal what you had told him, who would believe him? No one will believe what a pooka says, so you know your secrets are safe.

Second, there is the inner pain of the pooka. The shapeshifters suffer from a deep emotional pain brought on by the destruction of the natural world and the extinction of animals. They hide it well, of course, but it is always there. They can understand the need to help others keep their pain quiet. Others, particularly other fae, can sense this to some minor degree. When you are hurting inside, who better to confide in than someone who can obviously sympathize?

Finally, there is simply the force of the Dreaming at work, giving pooka that "You Can Trust Me" aura. All of these factors combined help to explain how and why the Confidant ability works.

Why can you choose between Empathy or Subterfuge to use the Confidant power?

It all depends on the approach the Pooka in question takes. There are different methods to get someone to spill their guts. Perception + Empathy represents the more honest approach, urging the individual to tell more through sympathetic nods and soft words. Perception + Subterfuge is the trickier approach, using wordplay and circular logic to fool the individual into talking. Seelie Pooka prefer the first method, Unseelie the second.

Why can't Pooka botch Empathy or Subterfuge rolls?

They are simply too good at it. Pooka are literally natural-born liars and empaths. The Dreaming gives them the power to be first-rate at lying and sensing the emotions of others. They can still fail such attempts (no one is perfect, after all), but they'll never screw up so bad it hurts (that is to say, botch the roll).

Magic Questions

So Sidhe are immune to all our magical pranks?

Almost. Sidhe are generally immune to any magic that makes them look foolish. But there are ways around this. First, the Sidhe of House Scathach are not immune (at least the ones that have stayed on Earth the last 700 years, not the new Scathach who just arrived from Arcadia). Second, go for magic that doesn't affect the Sidhe directly. Be indirect, and your cantrips should still work. Be creative. Finally, if all else fails, do it by hand. It's good to stay in practice.
